Road trip games for adults
While going on a road trip is super exciting, you might be wondering what you will be doing to pass the time while you are driving. I’ve put together the best road trip games for adults for you to play while having plenty of fun even though one of you, or both, will be doing the driving.
Most of these games can include the driver playing as they can keep their eyes on the road but still answer the questions or play along.
These are definitely the best road trip games for adults to keep everyone entertained, make you laugh, bring you closer together, and even make you have an epic and fun road trip!
What can adults do on a long road trip
There are many things you can do on a road trip to keep yourself entertained. But you might be wondering what you can do to pass the time when you are driving for long hours.
Well here are a couple of ideas for you!
Driving for long hours on your road trip is a great time to have some great conversations together. You could listen to a podcast you both like or one that you’ve always wanted to listen to. You could also listen to an audiobook too.
Sometimes just being quiet and looking outside is also a great remedy for everyone. Just look at the beautiful scenery passing along your route.
Take some time to create a great playlist to sing along! You could also find a great one on apple music, Spotify, or any other music platform.
There are also many games everyone can play. Here are all the best road trip games for adults I could find out there to help you have fun, laugh plenty and enjoy your time on the road!
How do you make a couple road trip fun
To make your couple’s road trip even more fun, playing games will help you do just that. Whether you are a brand new couple going on your first road trip or even if you’ve been together for a while, playing games will allow you to get to know each other even better!
You might discover some new talents in each other you didn’t know about or discover a great new side of your partner you didn’t know existed.
It’s a great way to get to know each other and become closer as a couple too.
What games can you play in the car on a road trip
There are so many games out there you can play while on your road trip but these are my favorites!
You can print out printables games, they would exclude the driver unfortunately because they can’t really color their sheet or write it down. But these can be great for families or road tripping with friends.
You can also play games to start a conversation with each other or download apps such as trivia games or musical guesses.
These are just a couple of ideas. Get creative and invent a new game. Have fun!
Conversational road trip games for adults
The License Plate Game
To play the license plate game, every player has to choose either a US state plate or a Canadian province depending on which country you are playing. It’s easier to play in these countries as each province or state has a different license plate.
In this road trip game, points are given for spotting license plates from different states. The end game is to spot as many different plates as possible in a set amount of time. You could even start a timer. You will be rewarded with one point for each state license plate you spot.
The pointing system is either one point per license plate found and the person with the most points win or you could award the point to the first person to spot that state’s license plate. You can only have a point once for every state license plate.
The Us version involves finding as many license plates as possible. Trying to spot all 50 states! Same for Canada but with provinces and territories.
You could definitely tweak the game to your own rules! Make it fun!
I’ve made these printables for you! Make sure to print out either the Canadian version or the US version to help you cross off those license plates!
Swear Jar
The swear jar game is sure to be plenty of fun and even annoying (in a fun way of course) for everyone.
Choose one or a couple of different words to use as swear words on your road trip. They don’t need to be actual swear words. Use more common words, it’ll make it even more difficult to try not saying these words along the way!
Every time someone says one of the swear words you’ve chosen, add their name to the swear jar. For the swear jar, you can use absolutely anything you can think of. A jar, a bowl, or even a piece of paper and you add a line beside the name every time someone uses a swear word.
At the end of the day, calculate how many times every person on your road trip used a swear word. The person with the most swear words will have to either buy drinks or if you are playing with younger passengers, it could be something they have to do to help out others. Get creative, find something fun that everyone will enjoy, and that won’t be too bad for the losing one!
Colored Cars
This game involves every player choosing a car color. But wait! That’s not all! You’ll have to choose odd colors or rare colors.
Every time a player spots a car from the color they chose, they get a point. At the end of the day or the end of your trip, depending on the time frame you chose to play this game, the person that has the fewer amount of points loses.
Same as the swear jar game, find something even the loser will enjoy doing as a consequence!
The Name Game
To play the name game, you will not need any material at all to play. You’ll just need your memory.
The first person starts by naming an artist’s name. The next player will then have to say the name of another artist or celebrity starting with the first letter of the last name.
Here is an example for you: the first player would say Miley Cyrus and the second player would say Cole Swindell and so on.
Would You Rather?
In this road trip game for adults, one person will give two options to their fellow players to choose from. The options can be anything you want.
It could be for example, would you rather go bungee jumping or parachute? And why?
It’s a great way to start a conversation with everyone on your road trip party.
Story Time
In this road trip game for adults, you will put your storytelling skills into practice. This game is pretty simple to play and you don’t need anything other than your imagination.
One person will start the story by saying one word. The rest of your companions will then add one word to this story one by one.
This is a hilarious game to play in a group. Your story can go in so many directions. You are guaranteed to have fun while creating some amusing stories!
Name the Song
The name the song game is quite simple as well and a lot of fun too. The goal is to be the first one to name the song that is playing.
A road trip without any music would be kind of boring right? So this is a great opportunity to practice your music knowledge at the same time!
To play, you simply have to put on a radio station, a Spotify playlist, or even the satellite radio if you have it. Try being the first one to guess the name of the song. Try not to put your homemade playlist as it will be too easy!
You could also try guessing the artist instead of the name of the song to make it even harder.
Going on a Picnic
Going on a picnic is some sort of memory game. The first player will start by saying: I’m going on a picnic and I am bringing … and add something they want to bring.
The second player will then say I’m going on a picnic and I am bringing, the item the first person said and add another item to it. The next player will have to repeat the same thing and list every item that was previously said. The game continues until someone doesn’t say them in the correct order or someone doesn’t remember the next item.
You can add a degree of difficulty by listing items in alphabetical order. You could also list items starting with the first letter of your name to make it more difficult.
I Spy
In this game, you’ll put your observation skills into practice. The first player will start by finding something by looking out the window. That player will then provide a clue for the other road trips passengers to find.
The first player to find it wins the round. It will be their turn next to make their fellow passengers figure out what they spotted outside their window!
The Alphabet Game
The alphabet game involves finding something starting with every single alphabet letter in order. You can play this game altogether. It will get especially difficult with the last letters to find something on the road.
The first player will start by finding something starting with the letter A. The next player will find something starting with the letter B and so on.
The game will end once you’ve found something starting with the letter Z.
Guess Who (Travel Edition)
Guess who can easily be adapted to your road trip or even any travels you are doing. You won’t need any equipment at all to play along and everyone in the car can play.
One player at a time will choose a country, a destination, a route on your road trip, or even national parks. They will keep it a secret and the other travelers will have to guess what they chose. Your fellow travelers will have to ask yes or no questions in order to try and guess what you chose as your travel edition of guess who.
Hum that Tune
Someone from your party will have to hum a song and the other companions will have to guess what song they are humming. Put your musical skills to the test and try guessing as many songs or even try to hum as many songs as possible!
You are sure to have a good laugh playing this game!
Most Likely to Game
Start by choosing a topic. It can be anything you want. This game is a great way to get to know each other better, have fun and even laugh a little!
To play the game, each player will take a turn. They will start by saying something like: ” most likely to start a business”. From there, each passenger will have to point the person they think is the most likely to do so.
It’s a great way to start a conversation and get to know everyone’s opinion on the matter. You’ll get to know your travel partners better and even yourself in the process!

You’ll have to spin the wheel and whichever categories you land on, this will be a question you’ll have to answer. You’ll have to answer art, science, history, entertainment, sports, and geography questions.

Road trip games for adults printables
Make sure to grab all your printables here so you are ready to have some fun on your next road trip!
I like to laminate them. Bring along an erasable marker. This way, you’ll be able to write notes, write down points, or checkmark the one you got. Then you still get to erase it at the end of the game to reuse them for another time.
