Canadian rockies

Photos to inspire you to visit Alberta, Canada

Ever wondered what the Canadian Rockies look like? You can see them from either British Columbia or Alberta. Those massive mountains are quite impressive to witness! Here are some photos to inspire you to visit Alberta!

Banff

I lived in Calgary for almost two years. Those two years were spent driving to the Rockies almost every weekend we were able to. There is so much to do out there, that even with all that time, I still feel like I’ve missed something. Alberta has the Rockies but there is a lot to do outside of the mountains as well.

So here are some photos to inspire you to visit and spend some time in Alberta, Canada.

Banff

When going to the Rockies on the Alberta side, Banff is a must! It’s a cute little village with many shops and restaurants. There are many great hikes you can do around there. In the wintertime, there is a little ski resort called Norquay. It’s not that big but we snowboarded in October!

Lake Louise

About a 30-minute drive north of Banff, you have Lake Louise with the Fairmont hotel. In Summertime, the water is turquoise blue. In the winter, there is a nice skating rink on top of the lake. The last time I went there in the winter, there were beautiful ice sculptures as well. You can also ski or snowboard at the Lake Louise ski resort.

Moraine Lake

Moraine Lake

Moraine Lake is accessible only in the summer. To go there, there is a road on the left before arriving at Lake Louise. Personally, I found it was better than Lake Louise. Definitely worth the little detour. Some days, there are some park rangers that can answer all of your questions.

Amazing views all over the place

This was on our way to Jasper. It seems every route you take is a scenic one! Every lake is turquoise and you have the snow-capped mountains in the background.

Icefields

Columbia Icefield was on the road to Jasper. It is part of the Icefields Parkway. It starts in Banff and ends in Jasper. There are many beautiful sights to stop at along the way. Just to name a few, there is of course the Columbia Icefield, Athabasca falls, and the glacier skywalk…

Jasper

Jasper is a nice little town. A lot smaller than Banff but as nice. There are multiple lakes around so a lot of hikes and nautical activities. As it happens, there is even a lake named ”Patricia Lake”! Alberta has many wild campgrounds to stay at. I just loved going to National Parks to camp. It is so peaceful and quiet. At night, when you’re laying in your sleeping bag, you can hear all the wild animals in their natural habitat.

Jasper

Canyons

There are many canyons all over the place in Alberta. This one is Maligne Canyon near Jasper.

A lot of wildlife

Everywhere you go, chances are, you are going to meet some sort of wild animal. From black bears to grizzly bears, to mountain goats, to bighorn sheep, and even sometimes you can spot a moose.

Drumheller

South of Calgary, there is the city of Drumheller which is famous for all the dinosaur findings. You can spend some time at the Royal Tyrell Museum where there are many, many exhibits on dinosaurs of all kinds. From tiny ones to a T-Rex, you will find everything in between. Drumheller is also home to the Horsethief canyon and some funny rock formations, called the hoodoos, in the badlands of Alberta. Those formations are due to erosion over time.

Hoodoo's

There is so much more to do and I know I am missing a lot! A great national park we wanted to go to but didn’t have the chance is Waterton National Park. Part of it is in Alberta and another part is in Montana.

Hopefully, these couple of photos have given you a little bit of wanderlust and inspired you as well to make a trip to the Canadian Rockies!
